I definitely think "private for-profit cities" will eventually become a thing like how in Elysium all the rich people live in a fancy schmancy space station while the grounded plebs live on the dusty crusty Earth.
I'm not sure how something like "California Forever" would work in a community of diverse income-classes. Curious how this company will be generating revenue. I think we'll be seeing more of this though in the 21st century, especially Dubai style man-made islands if these projects face too much pushback on the mainland.
These are great thoughts! Elysium is a great example; I’ve seen that film but it never came to mind. Dubai is another great thread - if they can’t take over existing land, they could just build their own.
I wonder if it’s actually about profits. Or revenue. It seems more just “hey, we need money to build the damn thing” and then it sort of becomes like an other city? Or perhaps they take a cut of everything spent? Or a fee to live there? Who knows.
