@john I agree with your first point that AI aids creativity in the same way stock photos do. 100%
I disagree that AI will never be able to be creative. LLMs will probably never be creative because by definition you’re constraining their output
But a neural network artificial intelligence that is unbounded would certainly be capable of creativity. Because what is creativity? It’s the ability to think and create a new idea, vs parrot old ones
Yes, but to me, it’s the ability of humans to do that. If you want artificial intelligence to do your creative thinking and endeavours for you, may as well plug into the Matrix
Well, I think you’re saying that one day AI will be capable of creativity, which then assumes that humans will use it to do their creativity. I’m saying, that unless it’s mainly human-led, that’s not creativity. That’s just putting in prompts and sharing the output as yours.
One day, neural networks will be able to be fundamentally creative in that they will have unconstrained outputs and agency independent of humans
Humans will interact and cooperate with them, but it will be augmented intelligence. Humans won’t outsource their fundamental creativity to machines. It will be a collaborative effort
This is in stark contrast to the LLMs of today which in fact are fundamentally non creative in that the way you get a better LLM is by constraining and fine tuning it’s outputs. This is a fundamentally non creative tool which is more like a paintbrush or camera. It can never produce anything. It is simply a medium
I partially agree with you, but there are also open source models like Mistral which you can download and fine tune locally for your own purposes. And I still think it allows more people to be creative and productive in their own lives.
But I agree with you that, like social media, we need to be very careful with this new technology. Constantly be asking “who is this benefiting? Where is this data going? Are my goals aligned with this companies goals?” Etc
Ai has no agency, so it's not really intelligent and so it can't really be creative. It's more like a roulette wheel just spouting stuff out linked to the promps. When I work on so thing creative I think about everything composition, design, line thickness etc.all is carefully chosen it's a very human activity.
Not sure the Hollywood thing is a good example. That’s just boardroom execs tying themselves in circles chasing that $$$ (think Disney/Marvel). Thats not an A.I. taking over — that’s them trying to design by committee, which as we know, always fails.
No doubt AI can be a tool in the hands of a creative person in the way stock photos are. But creative insights will only come from real intelligence, and AI will never achieve that. Execution of those insights could be aided by AI but it it's not rooted in traditional crafts it's always going to be derivative and lack creativity.
AI is anathema to creativity
I agree. However I think it’s important to distinguish between a large language model, which is what a generative pre-trained transformer is
And neural net technology, which is the inference part, and could, several years from now, have agency and be creative

Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like we’re on the same page? AI is a benefit if it helps augment human creativity

I think we’re talking past each other.

Right. Following. Yes, I get you — if the tools can be used to aid, not overtake, then perhaps we will see some benefits.
I agree though, right now, they’re being designed to replace — and the only winners there are big corpos who can get the creative labour cheaper

I appreciate the dialogue though

We spoke about this, this morning on a note, but I’m going to have to disagree here
Vision, taste and self expression are what constitutes creativity
AI is simply a new tool which will allow thousands more to self express, and those with vision and taste will rise to the top
Currently, who is more creative? Hollywood? Or the creators on YouTube?
AI is a new paintbrush, a new camera, a new way of expressing.
Not sure the Hollywood thing is a good example. That’s just boardroom execs tying themselves in circles chasing that $$$ (think Disney/Marvel). Thats not an A.I. taking over — that’s them trying to design by committee, which as we know, always fails.
There’s a lot of crap on YouTube too.

Agree. Tools that help increase human-led creativity? Perfect. Tools that just do it for us destroys the very essence of being creative
