Congratulations on your 10 years, Stephen. Raising a cuppa to you, and thanks for caring about connecting with your readers on this subject. There's human grit in your words, I can feel it - you've shown up at the page consistently, you've noticed the spikes and the dips and carried on regardless, that's cool in my book. Cheering.
For real though, you’re crushing it and you’re a great writer. I used to follow you on Medium and independently found you on Substack so the transition wasn’t all for loss :)
Only one pointer I disagree with: #9 and feedback.
I learned the hard way not to ask for feedback. (Often people assume you want editing suggestions—ack!)
This might have to do with the writing that is most important to me and that’s my fiction work. And only I know what’s going on there-how and why? It’s private.
But I also avoid feedback with NF.
You have to have hardcore faith in your abilities and a good, sane, non-sadistic inner critic checking in from time to time. So I always tell folks (that ask) to play around with the feedback thing.
Been enjoying your writing and attitude ever since I discovered you here! Great work. Here’s to another ten years!
